Flame of Devotion

While spending time studying and training in Sri Kaleshwar's ashram in Penukonda, India, I offered my service as a photographer. Usually, I photographed programs and documented what was generally going on, or objects as I noticed them in their surroundings.  This photo, however, came about one morning when I went up stairs to the top floor of the building in which I was living.  I don't recall the source of the blue light that streamed through the space by the doorway to the roof, but it took my breath away for that moment, as I bathed in its color and was transfixed by the shadowed decorative shapes.

A few days later when I saw that oil lamp being lit by one of the priests in the sacred temple, my heart leaped and the idea to photograph it in that blue space was born.

Photographed in Penukona, India. Printed in Los Angeles.
